A tribute to GF Sam Wagner

One of b.a.l.m.’s good friends and amazing artists passed away July, 5th, 2012.

We remember GF Sam Wagner. Sam has been involved in b.a.l.m. from the beginning and he will be missed greatly.
Sam was in the b.a.l.m. White Show in Lawrence, KS and San Antonio, TX, Anthropoi, Dry Bones, and the Dannon Art Project.
Sam was a wonderful person and artists. Our condolences, and much love to his wife Shelley and three children.

Obituary:

GF Sam Wagner, 38, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Thurs., July 5, 2012. He was born on Jan. 26, 1974, in Springfield, MO, the son of Lynn Catherine (Brimeyer) and Galen F. Wagner. Survivors include his wife, Shelley Wagner, and three children. Other survivors include Gilbert and Leone Brimeyer, Laura and Rick Coelho and their children, and Stephanie and Jeremy Jerguson and their children. He will be missed by many other family members and friends. Sam was a dad, a husband, a son, a brother, a grandson, a cousin, an uncle, a nephew, a son-in-law, a brother-in- law, a neighbor, a friend, a soccer coach, an artist, an architect, a Jayhawk, and a Sporting KC fan. He is now a citizen of heaven. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Fri., July 13, at Evangel Church, 1414 E. 103rd St., KC, MO 64131. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m., Thurs., July 12, at the church. Burial will be held in the Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens. NEW EXHIBITION FOCUSES ON EARTH AS A MEDIUM

Earth: Language and Symbols

Opening: Friday, January 20, 2012, 6-9 pm

From the earth we emerge and we return to the earth.

We explore our world and grasp to adequately describe through language and
symbols who we are and why. Through sculpted clay, compressed burned trees
and dried pulp, minerals retrieved and many other ways we reach out to speak
about the space that we inhabit as we gaze into the heavens. While it may sound
mundane, in actuality there is life at it’s fullest to be explored, and held in our
open hands for however long we are given. This exhibition, featuring work by
Rex Hausmann and Jimmy Greenfield, attempts to dig deep into these notions
through material, action, thought and image.

Universal Language: Rex Hausmann

Universal Language will exhibit a water painting performance, slide-show,
photographs, and drawings from a recent sojourn to Beijing and Hong Kong.
These elements explore an interaction the artist had with a calligraphy master
at the Temple of Heaven where he found that across many cultural barriers,
the two were able to bridge their varying cultural experiences by
communicating through brush and line. Additionally, Universal Language
will include an installation entitled Where There Is Land There Is War,
equating historical events that occurred at the Boston Common.

Signs…  Jimmy Greenfield

We live in a visual world of signs that guide, dictate, and define social norms.
Many of these are culturally specific, but others are universally understood

and form the basis of a symbolic language readable the world over.  The signs
depicted in this show are meant as warnings about the effects of unbridled

population growth that puts ever-increasing pressure on shrinking natural
resources, the wholesale and indiscriminate destruction of the environment,
and the inevitability of human conflict that will follow. Constructed on
desiccated earth, they are meant to inspire meditation about the future with
the hope that by doing so, humans will somehow rise above their differences
and recognize the extreme challenges ahead.  This “evolution of human spirit
and cooperation” is the only process through which we will be able to ensure
and maintain the survival of the living planet.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Rex Hausmann works as a full-time artist in San Antonio, Texas, and
New York City. He currently works in his family’s warehouses, home to
Hausmann Millworks: A Creative Community. Hausmann received a
bachelor of fine arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design. In
Atlanta, Hausmann studied under international artists Sandy Skoglund
and Patrick Dougherty. Hausmann has worked on projects and lectured
both nationally and internationally. His work and large projects often
revolve around identities found in communal and domestic contexts,
tracing their connections to religion and history. Hausmann credits
brother and musician Erik Hausmann as a major influence.

Since moving to NYC in the late 1970’s, Jimmy Greenfield has been
an avid sculptor, percussionist, environmentalist, and citizen activist
committed to community affairs.  In the late 1990’s, his sculpture
became more politically charged dealing specifically with issues of the
environment and human conflict.  To this end, in 2006, he created
Soapbox Gallery, a free street side public art venue in Brooklyn, NY
dedicated to inspiring and promoting uncensored socially relevant
work with a strong political narrative.

ABOUT THE CURATOR:

Darin M. White is an artist and independent curator based in
Lawrence, Kansas.  With his wife Shannon, a painter and arts advocate
they founded b.a.l.m. (beauty, art & life movement). Together they
promote creativity and action, and encouraging others in their art and
understanding. White continues to expand his artistic medium including:
sculpture, installation, printmaking, drawing, producing/ curating/
juroring exhibitions and writing art reviews and articles. His love and
awe of life and people are intertwined and explored in these various
avenues.

Sweeping Up the Mess Exhibition – Sept. 16th – Dec 16th 2011

You are cordially invited to The White Carpet Gallery for an art exhibition,

Sweeping Up the Mess which explores the notions related to marginalized,

overlooked, unappreciated, work, identity, as well as political and social

issues such as current issues, war, refugees, and in general cleaning up

the mess of life. The exhibition is free. Donations will be accepted to

support the Refugee Community Center.

b.a.l.m.’s co founder | co director, Darin M. White is the guest juror/

curator for this exhibition in Des Moines, IA. The opening reception

is this Friday Sept. 16th from 6-9pm and the exhibit will be on display

till Dec. 16th, 2011.

Artworks include, site specific installation, performance work, video,

interactive, yarn bombing, textiles, painting, drawing, sculpture and poetry.

Sweeping Up the Mess – Call for Art and Poetry Entries

Sweeping up the Mess is a juried exhibit of painting, sculpture, poetry, and other art forms inspired by, and which make use of, custodial supplies. The show, in partnership with Des Moines Social Club and Metro Arts Alliance, will be displayed from September 16 – December 16, 2011 in the White Carpet Gallery at Hillyard. The exhibit is open to all artists, 18 years and older. Entry Fee $5.00 (one art piece, or up to three poems). Discounts for multiple entries, and/or complete exhibit details, are available by contacting ccox@hillyard.com – email must reference: “Sweeping up the Mess – Art Exhibit”.

Ms. Seeger’s career spans 4 decades, and has shown National and Internationally. Her Longleaf Project, a knitted dress using plastic bags as yarn, combines social issues, community, and art.

Katherine O’Hara

Katherine Marie O’Hara earned her BFA in interdisciplinary arts from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2010.  Three months after graduation, she was awarded a residency with the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project.  In the past year, her multi-medium installation and sculptural works have been shown with Cara and Cabezas Contemporary, b.a.l.m 739 Flash Space, and Urban Culture Project.  She has also curated at the Monarch gallery, contributed to Bread & Glitter Magazine, and taught for the Kansas City Art Institute Continuing Education Program.

The Yarn Dawgz

The Yarn Dawgz are a knit graffiti collective founded by visual artists Dino Foxx and Billy Muñoz. Based in San Antonio, Texas, the Yarn Dawgz knit and crochet art for commissioned gallery shows and public art installations as well as guerrilla style graffiti pieces installed during their travels as professional performance artists. With over 15 years of experience as visual and performance artists, the Dawgz have displayed their fiber art in San Antonio, Austin, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and most recently in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. Having just completed a large public art installation at the Culinary Institute of the America’s for International Yarn Bombing Day, the Yarn Dawgz are now at work completing their first full gallery show that will open at Jump-Start Art Gallery in July of 2012.

Sweeping up the Mess is a juried exhibit of painting, sculpture, poetry, and other art forms inspired by, and which make use of, custodial supplies. Guest Curator: Darin White

Hillyard is excited to announce that Darin White, Lawrence, KS, has agreed to guest curate and jury the Sweeping up the Mess exhibit. White’s recent curatorial work includes: Anthropoi, White Show, Dry Bones, and TRANS•parent TRANS•lucent which was hailed by Review Mid-America’s Visual Arts Publication as being “mesmerizing, beautiful, puzzling, and disturbing, but what perhaps makes it successful overall is the effective curation. White has put together an exhibition that is direct and sensible; it creates an environment capable of producing dialogue between viewers.” In its review of Anthropoi, the publication states, “White’s curatorial and promotional skills are causing much murmur in Lawrence’s fairly tight-knit arts community.”

White graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in sculpture. He is also a founder of b.a.l.m. (beauty, art & life movement), a regional artists’ group and organization that welcomes artists of all disciplines. www.cargocollective.com/darinwhite.com

Submission Guidelines:

1.      Email ccox@hillyard.com for Complete Submission Guidelines and Entry Form.

2.        $5 Entry Fee must be paid before entry will be considered. Mail checks payable to Hillyard or process cash payments in person (see shipping address). Credit Card payments will be processed at 1-800-584-9237. All correspondence should reference “Sweeping up the Mess – Art Exhibit”.

Artwork –

• ·          All work should be inspired by, and make use of, custodial supplies. (Example: paint with a toilet bowl brush, urinal block sculpture, string mop installation piece, etc.)
• ·          There is no size or material requirements, however, the flash space ceilings are estimated to range between 11’ and 12’.

• ·          All 2-D and 3-D mediums will be considered.

Poetry –

• ·          All work should be inspired by custodial supplies. (Example theme: ode to the plunger)
• ·          Selected poems will be displayed in unison with the exhibit as determined by the guest curator.
• ·          All poetry styles will be considered.
• ·          Three poems = One Entry. You may submit up to Three Entries, or Nine Poems.

Exhibit Sales/Awards:

Hillyard takes a 20% commission of all sales with 80% going to the artist. Three Artists and Three Poets, whom the jury considers deserving, will be awarded solo shows on display in the White Carpet Gallery at Hillyard.  Total awards and display dates may vary at the sole discretion of Hillyard.

Make It Look Rich is a mobile, interactive, and engaging public art performance by Jimmy Kuehnle. Kuehnle will don a large inflatable suit, beginning his performance on the Museum’s lawn and continuing down the hill through the streets to downtown Lawrence.

Panel Discussion: “The Beautiful Life: Looking at Life and Perspectives on Creativity, Sideways”

In her downtown loft, Spencer Museum of Art Director Saralyn Reece Hardy will host a discussion fresh from CAM (Contemporary Art Month) in San Antonio, Texas, regarding the subject of artistic involvement and integration into society as a whole. Four artists/directors will speak about their work, ideas on contemporary art-making and marketing, and their curatorial work both nationally and internationally.

b.a.l.m. TRANS•parent TRANS•lucent Art Exhibition

Please join us for the opening reception of b.a.l.m. TRANS•parent TRANS•lucent
Art Exhibition at Flash Space 837 Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kansas
from 5-8pm August 27th, 2010 in conjunction with the first of the Final Friday’s
Art Events in the new (DLAD) Downtown Lawrence Arts District. This is a group
show exploring the idea of translucency and transparent curated by
Darin M. White. The exhibition will be up till September 17th and will be available
after the opening reception by appointment.

b.a.l.m. WHITE SHOW at Hausmann Millworks reviewed

The b.a.l.m. WHITE SHOW at Hausmann Millworks was a little lighter on the trek
back to Kansas.  Three additional art works sold while in San Antonio, Texas.
Congratulations artists!

We heard over and over how much people appreciated the level of quality that this
show has to offer.  We would like to thank the people of San Antonio for their
appreciation, requests for extension, supporting this traveling art show both in
purchases as well as attendance and by word of mouth.  Thank you to Rex
Hausmann and the Millworks for hosting and helping sponsor the exhibition.

The exhibition opened on March 6th, 2010 in conjunction with
Contemporary Art Month (CAM) with a well attended reception with many curators,
directors and art buyers and of course art lovers.  There was also a large closing
reception on March 27th, 2010, with art performances, bands etc and
because of numerous requests the exhibit was extended to May 5th, 2010.

Join us to hear Stephen Johnson speak about his work, as an event surrounding the
b.a.l.m. WHITE SHOW. Also view his work on display at the Signs of Life Gallery.

books at the bookstore below the gallery.

Short Bio
Stephen Johnson was introduced to academia at and early age with both his parents
being French professors. Besides French, he chose to pursue Art abroad at the
L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, and the Université de Bordeaux in France.
After receiving his BFA in both Design and Painting at the University of Kansas in
Lawrence, he moved to New York to study drawing at the Art Students League.
From these studies he went on to New York Academy of Art for Painting followed
by Art Criticism at the New School and finally Drawing at Cooper Union. In addition
to the multiple degrees, Stephen added writing and illustration to his repertoire, and
has written a number of award winning children’s art books that also entertain and
inspire adults. He is the recipient of numerous awards and achievements including
Gold and Silver Medals in the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of
Illustrators. Stephen also has a long list of Solo and Group shows, and has been
involved in a wide variety of Museum shows. He is included in extensive amount of
permanent museum collections in addition to corporate and private collections and
has produced multiple public art projects, and spoken at many lectures and
presentations. Stephen is adept in drawing, painting and sculpting and is able to
produce naturalistic work, but the majority of his work and his main interest is
abstraction.
