The lawns of the Kemper Museum will be a glow-in-the-dark
experience led by Lawrence’s artist cooperative
b.a.l.m. (beauty, art and life movement).
Activity stations will revolve around the themes of
Refresh – Explore – Move.
Find your way to the Kemper Museum to help create an
open-air interactive environment!

We are always creating the map…routing and rerouting our existence with
our movements between resting points,forming beneficial connections
along the way. Streams of creativity and ways of thinking run fluidly parallel
to one another and occasionally converge to illuminate perspectives. In this
context, art makes our neural pathways visible and helps us navigate the
geography between spaces. Our grey cell matter and the dark matter of the
universe become illuminated. We are joining with artists in our network to
awaken the event guests to realize their cumulative role in creating the map
with an engaging experience with light on the lawn of the Kemper.

Maps can be defined as any network formed in nature or culture . At night it
appears as a series of basic phospho -geometric components of circles or
dots, lines & spaces between shapes.These structures, which represent
constellations, bio phosphorescent micellenia networks in the soil between
mushrooms which allow for forestation, cities viewed from space which form
a dimensional structure for life, gleaming waterways or neuro-electric currents
and pathways in our brain become conduits or established pathways that support
functional and desirable ways of life to be traveled and revisited, and can also be
solidified and altered. Memories and relationships are formed at each juncture
and while navigating the unknowns, the dark matter or spaces in between, which
causes the design of the map to be in flux.

BREEZEWAY STATION – REFRESH:

Under the breezeway, artist Katherine Marie O’Hara’s crocheted
monofilament forms have a gift each guest is invited to take from
the suspended glow-in-the-dark elements.This lit wearable object
provides a visual map of your journey between the various stations
creating atrace of your steps and interactions and memory of
your involvement.

Sip a natural soda, kickback and listen to global and experimental
music by the Owl People, around glowing elements/sculptures by
artist Yuri Zupancic.

SOUTH LAWN – MOVEMENT:

Luminescent  artist inside a clear sphere will interact with guests while
mapping the topographic space.

Fiber and performance artist Judah Wagner designed and produced a suit
that in various ways uses multiplecolors of light to map the body.

Event producers, and artists Shannon and Darin White constructed
a collaborative glowing spherical structures  by transforming existing
objects.Guests are encouraged to manipulate and interact with
constructions and artists around the sunken lawn , creating a changing
map piece with the moving points.

NORTH LAWN STATION – EXPLORING:

Artists, Darin and Shannon White 10′ cube frame suspended & connected colored
glow-in-the-dark strings, neon , and glow elements, creating open air sculpture
environment.

Guests interact with the environment along with artists. Glow rope is provided to
use on the lawn as a drawing tool, creating lines, forms and shapes.

“The New Old San Antonio: Tales From the Little Big Town” Final Fridays May 27th, 2011

This exhibition features the works of 33 artists with deep roots from San Antonio who are in various stages of their careers, from emerging artists to well-established artists with works in museum collections. Produced and curated by Rex Hausmann of the San Antonio, Texas studio program, Hausmann Millworks: A Creative Community, and Darin M. White of the Lawrence art collective b.a.l.m. (beauty, art and life movement), The New Old San Antonio builds upon a budding visual arts connection between the two cities that began with 2009’s The White Show, and is presented in memory of Chuck Ramirez & Marcia Gygli King.

Make It Look Rich is a mobile, interactive, and engaging public art performance by Jimmy Kuehnle. Kuehnle will don a large inflatable suit, beginning his performance on the Museum’s lawn and continuing down the hill through the streets to downtown Lawrence.

Panel Discussion: “The Beautiful Life: Looking at Life and Perspectives on Creativity, Sideways”

In her downtown loft, Spencer Museum of Art Director Saralyn Reece Hardy will host a discussion fresh from CAM (Contemporary Art Month) in San Antonio, Texas, regarding the subject of artistic involvement and integration into society as a whole. Four artists/directors will speak about their work, ideas on contemporary art-making and marketing, and their curatorial work both nationally and internationally.

b.a.l.m. anthropoi opening review

There was a great turn out for the September Final Friday event at the 739 Mass
Street Flash Space with an estimated 1,000-1,300 in attendance.  Tom King from
Review Magazine did a brief review highlighting the b.a.l.m. anthropoi Exhibition
and curation.  The show exhibited 18 artists including Ben Ahlvers, Rob Allen,
TR Ericsson, Jason T. Clark, Larry Graeber, Duane Hilburn, Akiko Jackson,
Lacey Lewis, Don Lisy, Jung Hee Mun, Dave Root, Nicolette Ross, Frank Shopen,
Betsy Timmer, Dave Van Hee, GF Sam Wagner, Jay Walker and Shannon White
and last minute addition Erok Johanssen.

As a bonus editor of Lawrence Magazine, Nathan Pettengill, invited multiple art
collectives and groups to participate in a thematic collaborative interpretive
project for the Fall edition of the magazine, and display and Jason Dailey
photographed the work during the opening.  Included in the exhibition were
Fresh Produce Collective/… art gallery, the Percolator group/gallery,
Astroid Heads/Wonderfair Space, the Spencer Museum of Art
student collective, and a group of artists representing b.a.l.m.

b.a.l.m. anthropoi art exhibition

Coming off the inaugural event of Final Fridays there are great expectations
for this months opening. There was a fabulous turn out and response to this event
and we are hoping for sustained success in promoting art and artists and
introducing those who may not be aware of the variety and depth of
contemporary art to a little taste.  b.a.l.m. produced the August show
TRANS•parent TRANS•lucent which was able to bring some
good reviews, publicity and awareness for the Final Friday events.

Opening in conjunction with the Lawrence, Kansas Final Fridays
b.a.l.m. announces anthropoi – a group exhibit about how artist view people
curated by Darin M. White a beauty, art and life movement production.

Please join us this Friday September 24th, 2010 for the opening reception
at the 739 Mass Street Flash Space from 5-10pm.  Join us at 5pm for a special
appearance and collective work, and we also are looking forward to hosting a
variety of art collectives in the first hour of the opening.
Show dates are from Sept. 24th- Oct. 22nd by appointment.

SUNDAY BRUNCH, Clouds & Produce…

SUNDAY BRUNCH

Join us for some vegetable inspired food, music and creative conversations at our weekly SUNDAY BRUNCH tomorrow August 24th, 2008. We are making an egg fritata with fresh herbs and fresh vegetables with dips (and coffee). Bring something else to the mix to share and let us know if you are coming! We thought that you might like to see an interesting use of vegetables as a musical instrument in this amazing concert of the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra. Feel free to bring a musical instrument. We are going to try and make a carrot recorder.

Cloud recap

Last night we had a great time at the percolator for the “clouds are easy to love” opening reception. We jammed to Karl Ramberg’s unique music which I would consider a blend between experimental keyboard, electronic sounds of chaos, and off tempo/ miss-beats, with a little bit of ambient thrown in for good measure. I absolutely loved the sound. It takes an artist to keep a good sound going while doing so much. Karl happens to be an excellent stone carver as well. He has helped with Myles Mountain stone carve on numerous occasions. We unfortunately missed the poetry last night, but were glad to see some interesting and thought provoking cloud inspired artwork. One piece that stuck out as interesting (at least to a three dimensional artists) was an installation by Anne Bruce. It’s materials was cloth, gold fishing hooks, sugar and flour. The material was hung with fishing hooks on the end of fishing line suspending the varying heights of expanded cloth, SIFTING loads of flour and sugar. Some of the flour and sugar drifted below the fabric on the ground. Another piece that engaged everyone with interest and laughter was the paper mache cloud, on which a childlike face was painted, and below a group of simple paper cutout flowers that were attached to a crank that when turned made the flowers dance up and down. We enjoyed seeing many artists including Spencer Art Museum Director Sara Lynn Reece Hardy. Our kids while disappointed not to find the cloud themed inspired smores that they were looking forward to, enjoyed producing more cloud art for the ceiling of the art space. Add to this some cloud themed snacks, and other drinks, with a fanciful hop-scotch-esque spray painting on the concrete in front of the gallery by David Lowenstien to top off the cooler than normal artistic evening.

Dot Dot Dot ArtSpace Opening “Overcoming the Fears that Overcome Us”

Join us tonight at Dot Dot Dot ArtSpace (a Fresh Produce Collective Event) for a Show Opening called “Overcoming the Fears that Overcome Us” with artist Whit Bone. According to artist Ostaf Heller, this is Whit’s first solo show. Dot Dot Dot ArtSpace is located at 1910 Haskell, Lawrence, KS in a new gallery that was converted from a liquor stores back stock room. The space is simplistic and unassuming, but the art is as the name of the founding group suggests “fresh”. Here is hoping for some “fresh” art and creative characters tonight at the ArtSpace.

Marc Havener – A film maker’s time in Hollywood – An Invitation for: ‘On the Set of 21 (and other Hollywood movies)’ March 30th, 2008 at 8 P.M.

At first glance, Marc Havener is just another nice Kansas boy, who is tall and thin with curly brown hair and some hip glasses.  He likes to have a pint down at Free State now and again, and is just as comfortable with crowds or silence.  He is steady and calm with a sincere since of humor.  You might wonder what his thoughts are as sometimes they are revealed slowly and somewhat methodically and with deliberate voice and wisdom.  I noticed upon coming back from LA to the rolling hills of North Eastern Kansas how he grew up a little bit, and his laugh which was so pervasive ten years earlier was a little more reserved to be released.  Mark has been on a journey from the time he left.  A path that led him from Kansas Univeristy in Lawrence, Kansas, to Los Angeles, California, to knock on the doors of the film valley and search for a job in a field of dreams.  He became a barista at a local Westwood coffee shop, where a customer he got to know opened up the door to working on a movie set for “Ride With The Devil” right back in Kansas City.   

 

Since then, he has worked on over 20 films in the last 10 years.  This Friday March 28th will see the newest released film ’21’ on which he worked.  The film which is based on the true story and the book “Bringing Down The House,” about the MIT students who learned to count cards in Las Vegas.  Slightly over a year ago he spent a month in Las Vegas working on 21, a Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey film.  A few other movies that he worked on as a Set Production Assistant were “Thirteen Days,”  “Pirates of the Caribbean,”  “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” and “Fun with Dick and Jane.”  When asked in a soon to be published interview about how college had prepaired him for working in the film industry, part of Marc’s reply really resonated with me.  He said,  “…I also took full advantage of the fact that it was a liberal arts degree and thoroughly enjoyed getting exposed to all sorts of subjects such as writing, business, and East African Geography.   Drawing 1 was a huge struggle for me due to my lack of drawing skills.  But my teacher, Prof Roger Shimomura, hung in there with me and taught me how to “see,” which has continued to benefit my shot compostion.  Those classes, and others, opened me up to new experiences that have all applied to my filmmaking, be it as a storyteller, an artist or a business owner. ” 

Recently, Marc moved back to the Midwest to raise his family with his wife Jenea.  He is also working as the Creative Director for a company he created called Resonate Pictures, “focusing on character driven documentaries following stories that resonate with the human spirit.”  His interest is to produce documentories using the artistic eye that was cultured throught this time and the knowlege and hands on experience he received while in LA.  His business has also been producing corporate ethics training videos in a mockumentory style.  His creative eye, wit and wisdom will help him to succeed at yet another adventure.

 

The University of Kansas Film School will host Marc on Sunday March 30th at 8pm in Oldfather Studios located at 1621 W. 9th St in Lawrence, KS. 
Marc will be speaking on his time in LA and the day-to-day operations on a movie set from the production staff’s point of view.
