DANNON ART project
_________________________________________

Lawrence Arts Center
940 New Hamshire
Lawrence, KS

Exhibition dates: January 23 – March 3, 2012

Opening Reception: Friday, January 27, 2012, 5-9 pm
Closing Reception: Friday, February 24, 2012, 5-9 pm

Rex Hausmann will be creating a painting on the second floor at the Lawrence Arts
Center January 23 – 27. At the completion of his painting, this temporary studio
will handed over to a series of artists who will create new works, each leaving their
works on display. Over the course of five weeks this space transforms into a
melody of styles and mediums creating an exhibit that will only exist this one time.

Audiences are encouraged to visit the space beginning January 23 – March 3.

This project will be held in the North end, on the second floor of the Lawrence Arts
Center.

Rex Hausemann lives and works as a full-time artist in San Antonio and New York
City. Hausmann earned a BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and
Design. He has worked on projects both nationally and internationally and has
shown and lectured globally. His work and large projects often revolve around
identities found in communal and domestic contexts, tracing their connections
to religion and history.

Artist Note:
Dannon Art Supply/ Consulting/ Production/ Promotion/ Encouragement/
… heck, the story of a creative life in mid America! (With a Whole Lot of Friends)
COMMUNITY!

An installation/exhibition by a Creative Community, in motion.

The idea behind this project is simple: exposing an artistic community to an
audience for the audience to enjoy & participate. Much like Sol Lewitt had his
wall drawings, people instead of lines create a mesh of relationships,
metaphysically through e mails, phone calls. Eventually personal contact& a
physical object creates a totem of the persons visit. The process is open to
enterprising, yet simple boundaries exists: keep your voice within the specified
space of The Lawrence Arts Center. The small space will begin to look like a small
store, full of a verity of things for sale, with the space taking on the life of a studio
too. The space itself & individual voices will direct the exhibition itself. The
experience’s existence will changing every day. This a metaphor for the art of
creative community, the people we surround ourselves with, the people we as
human interact with on a daily basis & the trials & joys that come along with those
relationships.

NEW EXHIBITION FOCUSES ON EARTH AS A MEDIUM
_____________________________________________________________________________
Earth: Language and Symbols

Curated by Darin M. White

January 20 – March 10, 2012

Opening: Friday, January 20, 2012, 6-9 pm

From the earth we emerge and we return to the earth.

We explore our world and grasp to adequately describe through language and
symbols who we are and why. Through sculpted clay, compressed burned trees
and dried pulp, minerals retrieved and many other ways we reach out to speak
about the space that we inhabit as we gaze into the heavens. While it may sound
mundane, in actuality there is life at it’s fullest to be explored, and held in our
open hands for however long we are given. This exhibition, featuring work by
Rex Hausmann and Jimmy Greenfield, attempts to dig deep into these notions
through material, action, thought and image.

- Darin M. White, Guest Curator

______________________________________________________________________________

Universal Language: Rex Hausmann

Universal Language will exhibit a water painting performance, slide-show,
photographs, and drawings from a recent sojourn to Beijing and Hong Kong.
These elements explore an interaction the artist had with a calligraphy master
at the Temple of Heaven where he found that across many cultural barriers,
the two were able to bridge their varying cultural experiences by
communicating through brush and line. Additionally, Universal Language
will include an installation entitled Where There Is Land There Is War,
equating historical events that occurred at the Boston Common.

________________________________________________________________________________

Signs… Jimmy Greenfield

We live in a visual world of signs that guide, dictate, and define social norms.
Many of these are culturally specific, but others are universally understood

and form the basis of a symbolic language readable the world over. The signs
depicted in this show are meant as warnings about the effects of unbridled

population growth that puts ever-increasing pressure on shrinking natural
resources, the wholesale and indiscriminate destruction of the environment,
and the inevitability of human conflict that will follow. Constructed on
desiccated earth, they are meant to inspire meditation about the future with
the hope that by doing so, humans will somehow rise above their differences
and recognize the extreme challenges ahead. This “evolution of human spirit
and cooperation” is the only process through which we will be able to ensure
and maintain the survival of the living planet.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Rex Hausmann works as a full-time artist in San Antonio, Texas, and
New York City. He currently works in his family’s warehouses, home to
Hausmann Millworks: A Creative Community. Hausmann received a
bachelor of fine arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design. In
Atlanta, Hausmann studied under international artists Sandy Skoglund
and Patrick Dougherty. Hausmann has worked on projects and lectured
both nationally and internationally. His work and large projects often
revolve around identities found in communal and domestic contexts,
tracing their connections to religion and history. Hausmann credits
brother and musician Erik Hausmann as a major influence.

—

Since moving to NYC in the late 1970′s, Jimmy Greenfield has been
an avid sculptor, percussionist, environmentalist, and citizen activist
committed to community affairs. In the late 1990′s, his sculpture
became more politically charged dealing specifically with issues of the
environment and human conflict. To this end, in 2006, he created
Soapbox Gallery, a free street side public art venue in Brooklyn, NY
dedicated to inspiring and promoting uncensored socially relevant
work with a strong political narrative.

—

ABOUT THE CURATOR:

Darin M. White is an artist and independent curator based in
Lawrence, Kansas. With his wife Shannon, a painter and arts advocate
they founded b.a.l.m. (beauty, art & life movement). Together they
promote creativity and action, and encouraging others in their art and
understanding. White continues to expand his artistic medium including:
sculpture, installation, printmaking, drawing, producing/ curating/
juroring exhibitions and writing art reviews and articles. His love and
awe of life and people are intertwined and explored in these various
avenues.

Guest Curator: Darin White

Hillyard is excited to announce that Darin White, Lawrence, KS, has agreed to guest curate and jury the Sweeping up the Mess exhibit. White’s recent curatorial work includes: Anthropoi, White Show, Dry Bones, and TRANS•parent TRANS•lucent which was hailed by Review Mid-America’s Visual Arts Publication as being “mesmerizing, beautiful, puzzling, and disturbing, but what perhaps makes it successful overall is the effective curation. White has put together an exhibition that is direct and sensible; it creates an environment capable of producing dialogue between viewers.” In its review of Anthropoi, the publication states, “White’s curatorial and promotional skills are causing much murmur in Lawrence’s fairly tight-knit arts community.”

White graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in sculpture. He is also a founder of b.a.l.m.
From the Organizers:
The artworks for this exhibition explore a collective need to get higher, get lost, reach a higher place, and be transformed. The imagery in these drawings brings together a collection of utopian fetishes; objects and figures perched, often precariously, atop high places and craggy peaks. Through tiny glimpses of early American history and the so-called Age of Aquarius, the drawings also create warm but cautious vignettes of utopianism and escapism. Feelings of isolation, loneliness and abandonment permeate the drawings, contrasted by colorful elation and a sense of purpose through elevation.

Michael Krueger was born on January 5, 1967 in Kenosha Wisconsin. His family moved to South Dakota in 1970 and he spent his childhood years in Sioux Falls. These formative years in the West cultivated a fondness and curiosity for the history of Westward Expansion and the epic struggles that were cast on the Great Plains. In 1990 Michael earned a BFA from the University of South Dakota and in 1993 he graduated with an MFA from the University of Notre Dame. In 1995, Michael moved to Lawrence, Kansas for a teaching post at the University of Kansas. Michael’s creative research has taken him all over the globe from Asuncion, Paraguay to the United Arab Emeritus, to Scotland, England, Belgium, France and Italy. He has given over 100 lectures and workshops at venues such as Cranbrook Academy of Art, RISD, City College of New York, Edinburgh College of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boston, MA. He has recently had solo shows at Sunday L.E.S., New York, NY, Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston, MA, Packer/Schopf Gallery, Chicago, IL, Bennington College, Bennington, VT and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Recent group exhibitions include, KRETS Gallery, Malmo, Sweden, Baer Ridgeway, SanFrancisco, CA, Ambacher Contemporary, Munich, Germany, Glasgow Print Studio, Scotland, UK, Adam Baumgold, New York, NY and the Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA.

From the Organizers:
“These paintings examine the spatial and emotional relationships between facial features and expressions of multiple stacked portraits. Each work is an amalgamation of two or more images of one person. Thoughtfully positioned, the faces dissolve into one another. Their union develops subtle disturbances of clarity and coherence, while seeming to invent one creature of new feeling.

I chose black and white to keep the focus on form and value. Furthermore, I employed a variety of mark making to stimulate the surface and draw attention to process—to yield a sense of transparency, motion and life.”

Josh Adams was born and raised in Kansas City. At an early age he showed artistic interests and was encouraged by his parents to take piano lessons. The piano lessons later turned into drum lessons, which lasted until the end of high school. Josh also found solace in drawing as a means of expression, but never fully pursued the outlet until college. He attended the University of Kansas and graduated in 2006 with a BFA in painting and a minor in art history.

Since graduating, Josh has exhibited his work locally in solo and group shows, toured the country playing music in various ensembles and moved to Los Angeles to seek a professional career in studio drumming-recording with Mike Andrews and Melanie Laurent. He currently lives in Lawrence where he works and makes art and music.

Andrew Jilka’s “Better Living” is a show about the faults, failures, and aspirations that are pre-programmed into the notion of the American Dream.
The drawings reflect upon societal signifiers of health, spirituality, sexuality, and desire. These staples of supposed happiness are explored through
tedious repetition in drawings from the past ten months.

January 28 – March 11.
Opening reception January 28, 5-9pm. In conjunction with Final Fridays

Lawrence Art Center
940 New Hampshire Street 5-9pm

From the organizer:

As the New Year begins with a fresh set of goals and we close the door on a year of triumphs
& troubles, artists are often challenged to carry this anticipation into their studio. This exhibit
is a chance for the public to get a glimpse into “what’s coming” from Kansas artists and possibly
to learn about each artist’s creative process. It is also an opportunity for the artists to experience
their own unfinished works in a new/different environment. This exhibit speaks to the passion
and drive each artist has to create and will allow the viewer the opportunity to see what’s
informing the artist’s studio.

This exhibit will include works in progress, sketches, mock-ups, and resource materials. Some
of the artists will participate in the Lawrence Arts Center’s Art-in-the-Open project. These artists
will periodically work on their pieces during the run of the exhibit.

Participating Artists:

Molly Murphy, Stephen Johnson, Nicolette Ross, David Loewenstein, Karen Matheis, Louis Copt,
Angie Pickman, Jason Barr, Eric Dobbins, Jack Collins, Leslie Kay, Lisa Grossman, Jeremy Morris,
Shannon White, Darin White, Yuri Zupancic, Jennifer Jarnot, Steven Graber, Juniper Tangpuz,
Kenneth Kupfur, and Alicia Kelly

From the artist:

Jason Barr aka BARRR is a man of many words. These words are manifested into
pictures, paintings, & podcasts. His first solo show BARRR: I CAN HAS JAIL
reflects the insanity of a man in flux. BARRR shows the conviction & commitment
of the “busiest man in Lawrence!!!” I CAN HAS JAIL is the definitive look inside
the mind of BARRR. A manic collage of bravado, psychedelia, fatherhood, pop
culture, anxiety, religion, insecurity, sex, rock n’ roll, paranoia, hustling & ANGER!
Manic depression has never looked so good.

Exhibition Essay:

As children we hope for endless amounts of things that are less appealing once the
freedom to acquire them is ours. The crunching plunge through frosted corn to
find the prize is replaced by more deviant behavior and luxury wants.

James Trotter has turned the advertisement characters of his American childhood
into a language. His calligraphy of faded toys and pop iconography double as
documentation of his altars of collected collectible junk tucked in every corner of
his studio. Trotter’s psychedelic style showcases racism in commercialized
ethnicity, lascivious cartoons, and the general surrealism of what people choose to
push product. His landscapes are piled high with logos and useless fonts. Slogans
and imagery from his collection of rare funk 45s from the 1960-70’s weave in and
out of his drawings.

Seemingly unhindered by the burden of institutional political dialogue, James
Trotter’s landscapes are upsetting and delightful. His lines and layers are unhinged:
flowering with the fervor childhood sugar highs and flush with second hand desire.

©2011 Andrew Huffman

The current work involves an exploratory process reliant on the investigation
of the multiple-confrontation of line, volume, color, space, movement, proximity,
intensity, geometry, pattern, architecture, mirroring, and positive space in balance
with the negative. Although the work coincides with these many formal
relationships, it transcends these surface concepts through a meditative and
intuitive act that at times is a serendi…pitous and meandering process reliant on
investigating, inventing, experimenting, experiencing, hunting material, and
mentally proceeding into another world from the soul (consciously or
subconsciously), free from one’s physical limitation. Color implements provoke a
resonating, exploding, imploding, buzzing, humming, ambient, or distant noise.
The visual orchestrations utilize geometric patterns that induce an impending
and seemingly infinite constellation. Color married with architectural and
mechanical linework plays in a perpetually fluxing environment. Some proximity
relationships of the picture plane may induce a saccade (Ophthalmology. The
series of small, jerky movements of the eyes when changing focus from one point
to another) ; meanwhile, other areas of the picture plane provoke a seemingly airy
and tranquil atmosphere. This notion of pace fluctuation parallels with music,
as when an instrument’s articulation speeds up or slows down. It is my hope that
these subtle visual relationships perpetuate a visual playground free from the
obligation of what is known and concrete; rather these relationships ask if
meanings may come and go as they please, always shifting slightly and evolving.

These are a few of the locations that we are aware of, various other
exhibitions will be taking place at other venues. Just look for the yellow
listing of many events and a map and also you can view
Our website beautyartandlifemovement.org will also
to continue to have listings.

The Final Friday events continue to grow as the word spreads. We hope
that this will continue to be a fun and educational way for Lawrence to
see and interact with art and artists. We also hope that Lawrence will
help sustain this event by supporting the artists, the venues and the
organizations involved.

In addition to sustaining art in Lawrence please contact your local
representative with your support of continued funding for the arts in
Kansas. Go to http://www.arts.ks.gov to read a very important
announcement about proposed loss of major funding of the arts
in Kansas. We need your help to save the Arts from the proposed
cuts!

Loss of funding for the arts doesn’t just effect artists, it effects culture at
large, creative thinking and living in far reaching ways that may never be
fully understood.
